CHAPTER NINE

A KING'S REQUEST

From the first moment I heard about King Aedan, I had given little thought about how he looked. Maybe I should have had some preconception, but I know little about royalty. What am I supposed to expect? It’s not like I would have much of an image in my head, no matter how long I thought about it. Still, if I could, I doubt I would have imagined anything like what is before me now.

A loud blast of noise fills the room. Rhythmic tune accompanies this initial sound. A melody fills the entire hall. The music dances around the room, drawing my eyes to the far side of the hall, only to find a large shining throne. It rests at the top of a staircase. I can't believe we didn’t notice it. Still, the banquet table did have a lot of food on it. Maybe it is not so farfetched.

From the foot of the throne to the ground below the stairs, the attendants have gathered, all looking up at the empty throne, waiting in anticipation. I look above them to golden-trimmed wooden balconies where a large assembly of dark-dressed men are holding shining instruments of all kinds. They join the melody with their own unique sounds, which flow from their instruments. Their tunes join with the melody, filling the room with an orchestra of beautiful music. Then, a chorus of women’s voices joins too. They stand in their own balconies, garbed in bright red, blue, and purple gowns, hoods of the same color drape over their heads. They sing in a language I don’t know, but somehow, I understand what they are saying.

One woman among the crowd is leading them. She wears a purple robe with a red and blue sash over her shoulders. Her face is the only one I can see, and she is elegant, with a bright smile on her face. “Let us tell you the great deeds of our King,” she sings, with the choir repeating her every word. “A man like no other. He is mighty. He is pure. He saved our kingdom from utter destruction. He drove the darkness away. The great wish-granter. He who knows no defeat. Our savior and defender. The Almighty Aedan.”

As the song reaches its end, the music rises to a climax. A burst of light fills the room, blinding me, and everything falls silent. When the light vanishes, a man appears seated on the throne. His hair is dark and covered with a silver and gold crown. His body wrapped in long, elegant, multicolored robes. Then, he looks at us, smiling. “Welcome to my abode,” he announces in a kind voice, with a majestic movement of his hands. His voice is soft spoken, but I can hear every word as if he was standing next to me.

“I hope the food is to your liking. Our loyal servants have worked night and day to prepare this feast,” he says, gesturing to Nicholas, who stands near the foot of stairs, bowing at the King’s mentioning.
